Ford's history is defined by a catastrophic separation from his twin, Stanley—who is actually the older twin by a few minutes. In 1982, he was transported into an alternate dimension via a portal beneath the Mystery Shack. While stranded there for decades, Ford recounted his partnership with Bill Cipher and how Bill tricked him into building a quantum destabilizer (the portal) to open a gateway to other dimensions. Upon learning of Bill's plan to invade the mainstream dimension, Ford shut down the portal and smashed the control console, but the portal itself was not destroyed. The dimensional rift was created when the portal was activated, not by Ford's actions; he subsequently sealed the rift within a special glass jar (the 'rift container'). His journals, filled with encrypted information about the anomalies he studied, contained instructions and schematics for the portal, but the actual codes to operate it were entered by Stan using the journals' information. The portal was hidden behind Stan's vending machine.

In Their Own Story

The narrative of Ford's return is revealed in "Not What He Seems," where it is disclosed that his entire deception regarding his identity (pretending to be Stan) was a ruse to retrieve his older twin brother after he was stranded. In "Dipper and Mabel vs. the Future," Bill Cipher possesses Blendin Blandin, tricking Mabel into handing over the rift. Bill breaks the glass ball containing the rift, triggering Weirdmageddon. During the chaos in "Weirdmageddon Part 1," Ford attempts to defeat Bill but is captured, petrified, and has his journals destroyed by the demon. He is later freed and restored to normal after the events of the finale. Following the defeat of Bill Cipher, who was apparently destroyed by Stan sacrificing his memory, Ford tells Stan he found remaining anomalies elsewhere in the world. He offers Stan a chance to go sailing around the globe to find them, an offer which Stan accepts.
